Georgia International Horse Park

The city of Conyers began as a watering post on the Georgia Railroad and was named after Dr. W.D. Conyers, a Covington banker who helped negotiate the sale in the 1840s. The Monastery of the Holy Spirit is located just outside of Conyers. The 2,000-acre sanctuary has been home to Cistercian or Trappist monks since 1944. Check out the top family-friendly spots in this area.

Visit the home of equestrian and mountain biking events from the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympic Games at Georgia International Horse Park. The attraction now offers hiking and biking trails at Big Haynes Creek Nature Center, disc golf, horse riding trails, golf course and an arboretum featuring 37 species of trees, including the rare swamp chestnut oak. Plus, they host year-round equestrian events, concerts and festivals. Breakfast and lunch are served at Winner’s Circle Cafe & Grill at the Charles Walker Arena if you get hungry during your visit.

Featured in several shows, including “Stranger Things,” Olde Town Conyers has lots to check out. You can visit the historic Train Depot, brand-new Celebration Park, and the Old Jail Museum, which is open on select Saturdays. The downtown area is also home to local restaurants and shops. You can even watch confections being made at the Sweet Treat Depot. Starting in late November, you can ice skate for $15 per person while you’re there.

If your tween loved “The Vampire Diaries,” try a Mystic Falls Tour in neighboring Covington. You can take a trolley or walking tour of famous filming locations from the show, including the Clocktower on the town square, Damon and Elena’s rain kiss, Aunt Jenna’s funeral, Caroline Forbes’ house and more. Most tours last about two hours and comfortable footwear is suggested.

Head outside to explore at Denny Dobbs Park or along the Eastside Trail. Both outdoor attractions are in Newton County and offer free family fun. The multi-use greenway trail is 2.5 miles long; you can access it from the Library or Eastside High School. If you’re looking for a playground or ball fields, check out the park. It features two playgrounds – one for younger kids and another for the older set – as well as a batting cage, skatepark and splash pad (for when it’s warm).
