This Weeks Summer Fun Bucket List
Summer is here and we want to make sure no one hears “I'm Bored”. We're giving you a bucket list of places to go, things to do and ways to get crafty this summer. Check back every week for a new list of items. Too busy or not in town that week? Not a problem, you can view each week here. This week will give you 5 items that encourage summer reading, and ways to enhance your imagination. Now let's get started!
3 REASONS TO VISIT THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM THIS WEEK
1.Let’s Read, Let’s Move Event
Kick off the Mayor’s summer reading program with reading, eating & dancing to live music! Children will do crafts, read books, prepare a healthy meal & leave the museum with free books geared to their ages. June 6, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
2.Step inside a fairy tale world with their newest exhibit: Once Upon a Time… Exploring the World of Fairy Tales. The exhibit features multicultural fairy tales from around the world. From an African jungle to a giant's castle, your child will enjoy the hands-on exploration of 7 fairy tales from across the globe.
3. June & July are the last two months to visit until the museum is closed for renovations until late 2015. The Children’s Museum is closing August 1 for an $8.2 million renovation & expansion. The new & improved museum will feature a 3,000-square-foot mezzanine with a STEM focus, a new central exhibit “Gateway to the World,” & updates to the museum’s four learning zones.
VISIT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY & TAKE PART IN A SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Summer reading programs are a great way to have fun, learn new things and meet new friends! Georgia Public Library Service participates in the Collaborative Summer Library Program. The theme for 2015 is “Every Hero Has a Story.” The program encourages kids to keep reading logs and gives awards when they reach reading goals. Most libraries have story times, STEM programs, arts and crafts, magic and puppet shows throughout the summer. Check with your librarian for what's going on at your local public library.
THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR TOE PRINT CRAFT
Make a cute toe print craft inspired by your child’s favorite children book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Directions:
Paint your child’s big toe with the red paint & paint the rest with green. Press their toes on the white piece of paper on the floor & lift up carefully.
Find clues on atlasquest.com, gather your supplies, travel to the area & follow the clues to find the box. It is usually a small container that has been hidden, & inside you find a rubber stamp & a journal. You bring with you your own journal, a rubber stamp & an ink pad. After you locate the box you then stamp the box’s journal, & you stamp your journal with the box’s rubber stamp. It’s sort of like,”Take a penny, leave a penny.” So get out there, find a letterbox & have lots of fun!
PLAYABLE ART PARK, SANDY SPRINGS
The Playable Art Park is far different from the typical playground in appearance, experience and design.
Features: The Big Imagine swings, Dragon Fly slide/rock wall climbing structure, Wonder Wall, Twist & Shout, Granite Boulder Space Exploration and Spider Walk.
Amenities: Shaded pavilion and shady retreats along the path with benches; bike racks; water fountains and restrooms with changing tables. The park is dog/pet-friendly and has receptacles for pet use.
