“Shake it the east, shake it to the west, shake it to to the very one you love best!” –Spider Ananse in the Dancing Granny
Based on the book by acclaimed children’s author Ashley Bryan, kids and adults will tap their feet and clap and sing as Ananse, the clever spider of African folklore, tries to trick Granny into dancing away from her garden. The perfect length for kids of all ages, kids will love the music and dancing in this interactive show. Parents will be impressed with the top-notch choreography and percussion talent of the show’s actors. Families can choose to stay after for 10 minutes for a question and answer session after the show.
As the Alliance Theater is undergoing renovations, their shows in 2017-2018 will take place at theaters all around Atlanta. Dancing Granny will take place June 24-July 2 at The Galloway School and July 8-16 at Spelman College. Adults, $15; ages 6-17, $8; ages 5 and younger, free.
To get your kids excited about the performance, read stories about the famous trickster, Spider Ananse, beforehand. Our favorites are The Dancing Granny by Ashley Bryan, Anansi the Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti by Gerald McDermott, Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock by Eric Kimmel, and Anansi Does the Impossible by Verna Aardema.
