The Waldorf School of Atlanta, based in Decatur, teaches a hands-on curriculum that is academically rigorous and grounded in artistic and practical work, nurturing students to become well-rounded individuals in the world. As part of a 100-year educational movement of more than 1,000 schools worldwide, The Waldorf School of Atlanta develops in each student the ability to think with clarity, feel with compassion, and act with purpose in the world.

The WSA Early Childhood program nurtures a sense of wonder and curiosity in the young child, while encouraging reverence and joy for the goodness of life. The warmth and beauty of the classrooms and the mixed age groupings provide an opportunity for children to play and learn in a home-like atmosphere. Children thrive on the daily and weekly rhythms of the classroom with specific days for making soup, baking bread, painting and handwork. These rhythms provide familiarity and support the children as they move wholeheartedly into play and learning.

In the elementary years, Waldorf makes lively use of a time-honored practice: teaching children through stories that recount the deeds of heroes, the qualities of animals, the history of a people, cultural wisdom and spiritual truths. Stories also promote solid learning in every academic subject from the alphabet and basic arithmetic through zoology and Greek history. The Waldorf Middle School promotes a courageous exploration of the self and the community during the phase of adolescence where students begin to understand themselves and their place in the world. Our human-centered and artistic approach to education engages a student’s will to preserve and approach the world with flexibility and creativity.
