Unlike a traditional summer camp, SOAR exclusively serves youth and young adults with learning and attention challenges. All of SOAR’s camps are outdoor-adventure based where campers experience a variety of activities such as surfing, llama trekking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and canoeing. These experiences empower campers to overcome challenges and relate these experiences to other aspects of their lives. For over 45 years SOAR has focused on campers’ individual strengths, rather than deficits, and adapted programs around specific needs of the youth they serve. SOAR’s goal is for each camper to increase self-confidence, make friendships and develop life skills. The staff hopes to instill the value of exploration, goal setting and perseverance through outdoor activities. Courses are 10- to 18-day sessions for boys and girls ages 8-25 from June-August with programs in Balsam, N.C., Dubois, Wyo., and Florida Keys.
