Anthony Schmidt: Teen with Autism Goes Big with His Photography
Kids can find and pursue their passion no matter their age. From a young age, Anthony Schmidt has been fascinated with cars, collecting all different makes and models — of miniature cars, that is. Combining his love of cars with a passion for photography, Schmidt makes the mini models come to life in a big way by creating life-sized imitations.
Now 18, Schmidt has honed his talent for taking photographs of miniature cars to make them look real. He’s collected cars from all eras, and he uses his historical knowledge of the cars to find the perfect scene for them. To create the right vibe, he may transform the mini vehicle by adding patina or paints to make it look rusted. Then, he uses natural settings and other toys or pieces to fulfill his vision. He’s photographed cars at restaurants, the salvage yard, on the road, at the beach — wherever his inspiration drives him. He angles the cars and other accessories just the right way, so the perspective of the photo changes. Every detail is important for capturing the photo, so the illusion of the life-sized image doesn’t break.
His images are available on his online store as calendars, books, prints, clothing and puzzles showcasing his talent. In 2026, Route 66 celebrates its 100th anniversary. Later this spring, his family plans to travel the route to document America’s most iconic highway with Schmidt leading the project. You can support the idea by pre-ordering the coffee table book paying tribute to Route 66. You can find his store and more about the upcoming project at anthonyschmidtphotography.com.
His story celebrates the creativity and beauty of autism, reminding all viewers of his photography how incredible difference is.
