SUMMARY:Picture the Dream: The Story of the Civil Rights Movement through Children’s Books
DESCRIPTION:The “Picture the Dream” exhibit at the High Museum of Art was a picture-perfect outing! With all of the challenges of 2020\, from COVID-19 leisure limitations to a heightened awareness of racial and social inequities\, I was happy to find a timely and engaging outing for my entire family. \n \n\n \n\n \n \nMy family and I strolled up Peachtree Street to a very open High Museum that was not at all crowded … neither inside nor out. We wore masks with our timed tickets in tow\, which are now required for safety measures. Once inside\, my 8-year-old twins enthusiastically ran towards a table filled with blue smARTboxes\, which contained complimentary supplies for art projects. The boxes are free to Georgia residents ages 6-12 and contain a new set of art supplies that can be picked up every month. Once we collected our smARTboxes\, we were off to the exhibit. \nUpon immediately entering the “Picture the Dream” exhibit\, I was impressed with the beautiful set up and colorful display of several pieces of artwork\, ranging from paintings and prints to collages and drawings. My twins were immediately drawn to the various images and captions that powerfully represented key events from the Civil Rights Movement. Artwork depicting children of the Civil Rights Movements and their roles as activists with titles such as “The Story of Ruby Bridges” drew special interest. Fortunately\, I was able to use my “Picture the Dream” Family Discussion Guide to further engage my children and encourage them to think about the story the artist was trying to tell. A stroll through the exhibit\, which also included an area with a looping short film of interviews with key Civil Rights leaders\, gave me an opportunity to really talk about bigotry and oppression with my children in an age-appropriate way. \nMy entire family was intrigued throughout all three sections of the exhibit. The first section investigated the conditions leading up to the Civil Rights Movement. The second section highlighted key voices and events of the movement\, while the third section explored present day conditions with a look at what has changed and what progressive work can still be done. \nAfter we exited the third section of the exhibit\, I was very pleased as a parent to see the small “pop-up” library of  children’s books related to the exhibit that were available for browsing right outside. The area was complete with a few tables and bookshelves containing various titles that could be purchased in the museum gift shop as well. Fortunately\, my twins and I were able to sit in this area and read a few books before heading out of the High Museum. \nThe “Picture the Dream” exhibit was a very enlightening experience\, that was both fun and educational\, and a great conversation starter for parents and their children about history\, activism and race. \n– Monica Croom \nPicture the Dream: The Story of the Civil Rights Movement Through Children’s Books. SUMMARY:Review: Winnie-the-Pooh: Exploring a Classic at the High Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:For those who grew up reading “Winnie-the-Pooh” stories\, this exhibit is a dose of nostalgia. For today’s kids\, it’s an adventure in discovering an adorable teddy bear who has grown ever more popular over the past 90-plus years. \n \n\n \n\n \n \nWinnie-the-Pooh was first presented to the public in 1923\, after political writer A.A. Milne was inspired to tell stories about his son\, Christopher\, and his son’s favorite teddy bear\, Winnie-the-Pooh. While Christopher played\, his father watched and chronicled their imaginary adventures. Artist and cartoonist E.H. Shepard illustrated the stories. \nTeddy bears\, named after U.S. President Theodore” Teddy” Roosevelt\, were popular toys in the early 20th century\, and Christopher got his on his first birthday in 1921. Originally\, the bear was named Edward\, but Christopher renamed him after he saw a real bear named Winnie at the London Zoo. \nThe exhibit features numerous original drawings and books\, plus photographs of the author and his son playing with his bear. \nBefore visiting the exhibit\, take time to read a couple of the Pooh stories to your child so he’ll be familiar with Winnie\, Christopher Robin\, Piglet\, Eeyore\, Rabbit\, Tigger\, Kanga and Roo. At the exhibit\, kids can sit in trees scattered throughout and listen to the only known audio of the author reading Pooh stories. \nThey also can play “Poohsticks” on a bridge over a projected river. “Poohsticks” is a game Winnie-the-Pooh invented\, where he and his friends drop sticks into the river and guess whose stick will reach the other side of the bridge first. \nAnother popular spot for kids is a drawing table with pencils and papers so children can try their hand at sketching Pooh and other favorite characters. Two-year-old Ella\, who was visiting the exhibit with her father\, liked sitting in the Nursery bed and reading books set out for children to explore. \nOn Saturdays and Sundays\, don’t miss live storytimes at 1:30\, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. For babies and toddlers\, visit “The One Acre Wood” play space at the Woodruff Arts Center to explore textures and sounds inspired by The Hundred Acre Wood from Winnie-the-Pooh stories. (Open through July 15\, Mon.-Fri. 1-4 p.m. Sat. and Sun. 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 9-15\, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.) \n– Becky Cooper \nThis exhibition\, organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London\, explores the history and legacy of Pooh through original sketches\, photographs\, memorabilia and letters. The display also includes interactive elements that bring Shepard’s illustrations to life. Tues.-Thurs. And Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m.  Fri. 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Sun. Noon-5 p.m.  Ages 6 and older\, $14.50; ages 5 and younger\, free.

SUMMARY:Painter and Poet: The Wonderful World of Ashley Bryan
DESCRIPTION:Painter\, poet and storyteller—Ashley Bryan has created a wide variety of artwork inspired by African and African-American experiences. This remarkable man\, born in 1923\, began making books and telling stories at age 6. Even as a boy\, he was struck by how few black characters he found in books. Now in his 90s\, he’s still creating stories and art\, and even making puppets from found objects. \n \n\n \n\n \n \nThe Woodruff Arts Center along with the High Museum of Art have developed a variety of exhibits\, shows and activities to honor his colorful and meaningful books. \nMy family recently took a visit to Painter and Poet: The Wonderful World of Ashley Bryan at the High Museum of Art. My children loved looking at the colors and all the different animals in his artwork. We picked up an information sheet that contained a fun scavenger hunt for the exhibit that encouraged the children to look carefully at the artwork\, count figures and make up their own stories as they moved through the museum. \nWe ended the scavenger hunt at a book nook with storyteller Akbar Imhotep. He entertained the children with stories written by Ashley Bryan\, poems\, rhymes and drumming. Akbar and storyteller John Doyle created a 15-20 minute program especially for the exhibit and will present it only on Second Sundays until the exhibit closes on Jan. 21. \nWhen we left the Ashley Bryan exhibit\, there was still much more to do. We were thrilled to find puppets inspired by Ashley Bryan in the Greene Family Learning Gallery. The kids could play with the puppets and act out scenes from the stories they had just heard. Visiting the High was a great chance to let my children see\, hear and touch the arts. \n–Nicole Mabry \n
