DESCRIPTION:©AMNH/D. | Finnin \nFernbank Museum’s newest exhibit is a fun complement to its permanent dinosaur collection. Developed by the American Museum of Natural History in New York\, it’s an interactive and educational look at the largest flying animals that ever lived.     \n            \n\n  \n\n                \n     \nEntering the large exhibit hall\, we saw that it was divided into several rooms\, each with a different topic or interactive activity related to the life of this very special animal. These include Flight Lab\, Life on Land\, Explore Up Close\, Colorful Crests\, Finding Food and New Discovery. \nMy girls: An 11-year old and 7-year-old twins were most intrigued by the flight lab. There are several flight stations set up where they could stand and flap their hands in front of a screen with a pterosaur on it. The pterosaur’s wings flapped at the same speed of their own arm motions. \nThe girls were also interested to learn that pterosaurs ate prehistoric fish. This display included an “ocean” with glass rods depicting water\, prehistoric fish\, and flying fish suspended overhead. Seeing one of the pterosaurs about to capture a meal\, one of my twins exclaimed\, “Mommy\, look at his teeth!” \nYounger visitors will be fascinated by the life-sized pterosaur models hanging from the ceiling. Visual displays\, particularly the area which shows how the pterosaurs evolved\, will also capture the attention of younger kids. \nKnow Before You Go: This exhibit is a must-see for dinosaur lovers; I recommend it for kids ages 3 and older. Adults who love fossils\, archaeology and zoology will also enjoy it. We enjoyed a meal in the museum cafe; the kids’ meals included a dinosaur-shaped crayon and a coloring book. SUMMARY:Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum
DESCRIPTION:On a visit to Fernbank Museum’s new exhibit\, “Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum\,” kids will marvel at the cool artifacts and adults will gain a greater appreciation of how difficult it was to design and build the Colosseum. The first thing we noticed as we entered the exhibit was a painting on stone that is more than 2\,000 years old! My daughters and I examined a real gladiator sandal\, architectural and statue remains and weapons preserved from the Colosseum. We learned that the round amphitheater was a distinctly Roman invention. “Seeing a real gladius (sword) and dagger is even cooler than I thought it would be\, even though it is rusted\,” my 14-year-old daughter Georgia exclaimed. My kids were familiar with many concepts from learning about the Roman Empire in school and from reading “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” book series by Rick Riordan. The exhibit gave them visuals for things they had read about and lots of information about the artifacts. Some of the attire on display includes well-preserved artifacts such as helmets\, spears\, daggers and “greaves” (shin guards). One little boy marveled\, “That’s a trident\, like Ariel’s dad’s!” as he looked at examples of uniforms and weapons worn by gladiators. Videos bring the training ludus and combat to life in a tasteful but exciting way. In the last area of the exhibit\, kids can dress up in costumes\, or play with a puppet stage and puppets\, a Colosseum building set and puzzles.     \n            \n\n  \n\n                \n     \nGood to Know: As a mom and preschool teacher\, I was initially concerned about depictions of violence in the exhibit considering the history that I know of gladiators. It was good to see that there was no blood and the emphasis of the exhibit was on how complicated and challenging it was to build the Colosseum\, and how gladiators were trained and attired. \n–Becky Cooper  \nDiscover the story behind one of Rome’s most brutal and celebrated traditions\, gladiators. From the opening of the interactive outdoor WildWoods play area to exciting new programs and events\, this Atlanta favorite is better than ever. It’s easy to spend an entire day here – especially when you make time for the new temporary exhibit\, Mammoths and Mastodons.     \n            \n\n  \n\n                \n     \nWatching the film “Titans of the Ice Age” in the Giant Screen Theater is a fantastic way to begin the adventure. This overview of how ancient species survived and fell to extinction as Earth’s climate changed gives young visitors vocabulary in context\, which will allow them to learn even more from the exhibit. I watched the film with two eight-year-old boys\, and their favorite fun fact was the tusks of mammoths and mastodons grew in rings\, a little each year\, just like a tree! \nThen we made our way to the exhibit\, where touchable models and colorful graphics were placed alongside actual fossils – including tusks. This arrangement helped us imagine what these animals and their lives were really like. The exhibit includes several interactive stations to help kids learn about how animals adapt to their environments\, including manipulating a robotic elephant trunk. And of course\, the “match the poop to the animal” station was a hit. \nThe exhibit helped kids connect the familiar – elephants and buffalos they have seen – to creatures that have been extinct for tens of thousands of years. It gave us an opportunity to talk about modern climate change in a relatable and tangible context. It was an enormously fun day getting to learn about giant animals! \n– Sherry V.
