Children’s
Adventure Garden
Brook Run Park, Dunwoody
Dunwoody residents have eagerly anticipated the day
when their children can run and play at a premier
playground right in the neighborhood. This month,
the dream will be realized, not just for Dunwoody,
but for all of DeKalb County.
Atlanta Parent Magazine got a sneak preview of the
Children’s Adventure Garden that is scheduled to
open in October, and it is every child’s dream
playground. Located at the front of the park, the
expansive playground beckons children of all ages to
explore and discover. Landscape architect Marti
Watts, RLA, of Altamira, designed the Adventure
Garden to incorporate shade, water, and native
Georgia plants and rocks. The effect is an exquisite
playground that highlights the park’s natural
beauty.
With four clusters of colorful play structures – two
for ages 2-5 and two for ages 5-12 – the playground
offers something for everyone. Each age group can
slide, swing, and climb to their heart’s content.
Coated in plastic, the metal structures will be
comfortable to play on, even in the heat of summer.
Protective rubberized matting below the equipment
helps cushion falls, not to mention the added bonus
of no wood chips in the kids’ shoes!
While small children will enjoy the sandbox areas,
older kids will be challenged by the many climbing
structures. Toddlers will revel in the gentle waves
of a sidewalk designed for tricyle riding; the older
set will like unique features such the “log roll,”
which requires balancing to remain on top. A
multicolored tunnel in one of the areas adds a
dramatic flair.
Another dramatic element of the Adventure Garden is
a striking marble globe fountain, donated by the
Rotary Club. On a seasonal basis, water pumping
under it keeps the globe revolving.
Children and adults alike are attracted to the
shallow stream that flows through the playground.
Lined with Georgia river rock, the bubbling creek
culminates in a small pond. Natural landscaping
deters children from entering the pond.
An elevated walkway provides a place to stop and
observe nature, apart from the play structures.
There, children can climb on the rope walls or watch
birds and other wildlife through child-sized
telescopes.
