Vaughn-Jordan Children’s Garden and Playground
Centennial Olympic Park, Park Ave. W, Atlanta
Kids
raised in the suburbs sometimes get the idea that
the city is just one big place where grown-ups go to
work. One trip to Centennial Playground is all it
takes to realize the city has a playful side, too.
Located on the northeast side of Centennial Olympic
Park, the playground was originally built as a
gathering place during the 1996 Olympic Games. While
the circle harkens back to the games, the park now
is a beautiful green space used to relax, play and
just breathe.
Cushioned by a rubberized play
surface, the playground has four slides, several
bridges, a glider and numerous climbing areas. The
play area is divided into two areas: one for
toddlers and one for older children. It’s not all
designed for the kids, though. The play area is
circled by eight comfortable benches, so worn-out
caregivers can take a break while keeping an eye on
their charges.
Just steps outside the playground,
generous grassy areas are perfect for a game of
Frisbee or to practice a cartwheel or two. Across
the park, the popular Fountain of Rings draws kids
in with an irresistible force. Frolicking is allowed
and encouraged, so don’t forget a towel for the
soaking wet kids! Wait until the hour changes and
enjoy a choreographed water display.
Settle in the east or north pavilion
to enjoy your homemade pb&j's; for the
spur-of-the-moment hunger pang, the Fountain Side
Café is in the park’s center.
