There are many reasons to create a
scrapbook. Whether it’s to remember a summer
vacation or to commemorate a child’s first
year, it’s all about preserving memories.
“My son Quintin is 5 years
old and he loves to scrapbook whenever we
have time,” says Mandy Kerns, a local
scrapbooking expert and mom. “It’s a great
project after a trip or special event. I sit
him down with extra pictures and some
supplies, usually a sheet of stickers and a
marker. Then we add his pages to the
scrapbook I’m making for him.” |
When scrapbooking with your child,
make sure to supervise them, especially where
scissors, glue and paints are concerned.

Kerns suggests letting kids work on 6x6, 8x8 or 8
½ x11 albums, as the larger ones can be intimidating
for children. “A huge part of scrapbooking is
telling the story,” Kerns explains. “As many
youngsters can’t write yet, interview your child
about each photograph they have selected and write
it for them.” For little ones who are learning to
write, let them journal in list or bullet form. For
decorating, Kerns suggests rubber stamps. “They’re
easy for kids to use, and fun,” she says.
Encourage your children to be creative with their
scrapbooking; get them to make a page for each set
of grandparents each year. You can make “scrapbook”
cards for holidays like Father’s Day and family
members’ birthdays. “The possibilities are endless!”
Kerns says.
