Booth Western Art Museum: $

Get artsy when you view the contemporary Western American art housed at this massive 80,000-square-foot museum. Civil War art, presidential portraits and letters, Western movie posters, and Western illustrations can all be viewed at the Booth. Kids will love the Sagebrush Ranch – an interactive gallery where children learn about art and the American West.

Did you know? It’s the second largest museum in Georgia.

Southeastern Railway Museum: $

It’s all aboard at this museum, which houses more than 90 specimens of rolling stock, including historic Pullman cars and classic steam locomotives. Ride in restored cabooses and let the kids interact with these giants of transportation.

Did you know? Atlanta’s railway museum was originally dedicated in October 1958 and was named Cinderama. It was formerly located in Lakewood Park.

Bulloch Hall: $

Step back in time at this historic mansion, which was the wedding venue of President Theodore Roosevelt’s parents. The home is an architectural symbol of temple-form houses of the period. The grounds include reconstructed slave quarters, privy, summerhouse, wells and gardens, as well as an exhibit on the family’s history.

Did you know? Maj. James Stephens Bulloch, one of Roswell’s first settlers and the grandson of Gov. Archibald Bulloch, built Bulloch Hall in Roswell in 1839.

Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center: $

Discover the unique combination of elements that allows life to thrive on our planet at GEHC’s various hands-on exhibits. Blue Planet focuses on the water cycle, Waterways explains why civilizations sprouted up around rivers and harbors, and Discover H2O will be the kids’ favorite by far. (You may want to bring a change of clothes for younger ones – they’ll get wet while learning here.)

Did you know? The building’s roof is planted with drought-resistant, low-growing native species of plants, eliminating the need for irrigation.

APEX Museum: $

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the African American Panoramic Experience focuses on the history of black families in Atlanta. With information on Auburn Avenue, the first African-American businesses in the area and a hall of fame of sorts, APEX is an all-day learning extravaganza.

Did you know? A drugstore established in 1923 by Clayton R. Yates and Lorimer D. Milton was one of Atlanta’s first black-owned businesses.

Michael C. Carlos Museum: $

Emory University’s campus is home to the wonders of Egypt at this museum. Discover the lost civilizations of the Nile, King Tutankhamen, Sub-Saharan African Art and more at this classical museum.

Ivan Allen Jr. Braves Museum & Hall of Fame: $$

Featuring more than 600 Braves artifacts and photographs that trace the team’s history from its beginnings in Boston (1871-1952) to Milwaukee (1953-65) and finally to Atlanta (1966-present), the museum is located in Turner Field at Aisle 134. Guided tours of Turner Field begin here.

Did you know? Hank Aaron’s 715th home run bat and ball and the 1995 World Series trophy are housed here.

American Museum of Papermaking: Free

Learn how paper is made, the various technical aspects of making the stuff, and view more than 10,000 watermarks, papers, tools, machines and manuscripts. If that isn’t enough paper for you, check out the 2,000 items the museum also houses.

Did you know? Formalized paper sizing came into existence to make mail delivery easier – 8½” x 11” paper became the norm in the U.S. on June 15, 1933.

MLK Historic Site: Free

Visit the spot where one of the nation’s most influential civil rights leaders was born. A guided tour leaves from the visitor center. The center is where you begin your experience with an exhibit, a walk through the Peace Plaza and finally the King Center, which houses a library, archives and Martin Luther King Jr.’s final resting place.

Did you know? Mama King (Alberta) was killed in 1974 while playing the organ. A young black man named Marcus Wayne Chennault was the shooter – he died in prison in 1988 while serving a life sentence.
