“Kennedie is starting first grade in the
fall. Tess is 3 years old and Kade is 2;
they both attend preschool. The girls love
wearing skirts and tank tops. It’s easy and
cool for the hot weather. Kennedie loves her
pink espadrilles! I like putting Kade in
khaki shorts and T-shirts with cute sayings
on them (i.e. “My Dad’s tattoos are cooler
than yours”). We love to shop at Target
because you can get a nice variety for a
great price. When we splurge, I love Ed
Hardy T-shirts for all of the kids and Juicy
Couture for the girls.” – Kim Hudson, wife of Atlanta Braves pitcher
Tim Hudson
“Our 5-year-old, Shelby, is going to
kindergarten in August. Our 11-year-old is
starting parochial school in the fall, so
we’ll see how wearing uniforms five days a
week goes. We like to shop at Old Navy, The
GAP and Target because the clothes are, for
the most part, sturdy, durable and long
lasting. They’re also cute and trendy – so
they’re still stylish, which is probably
more important to me than to the kids! Jeans
are always a favorite, and cute T-shirts,
with some sort of picture or design, are
always popular.” – Jovita Moore, anchor, Channel 2 Action

“My girls are Georgia, who’s 7, and
Alexandra is 5½. They like the jeans with
flare at the bottom and stitching and
embroidery down the pant leg and on the back
pockets. They also love the tie-dyed tops
and animal print shirts – Georgia’s been
asking for those, and it seems to be really
big this season. We usually go to Nordstrom
or Bloomie’s; there’s another place we like
a lot called Blue Genes Kids, and for shoes
we like Sprong on Pharr Road. For clothes we
love the brands Flowers by Zoe, Guess, Juicy
Couture and Lipstick. It’s a lot fun. They
are liking the bigger girl stuff now, not as
many flowers and frills I used to like for
them.” – Anne Karatassos Symbas, philanthropist,

“Our daughter Vivi is starting kindergarten
this year, and our son Frank is in
preschool. Vivi loves to dress creatively.
She especially likes long dresses that make
her feel like a princess. The longer the
dress, the more magical it feels. She also
really loves headbands right now. She used
to wear big bows in her hair, and now she
takes the bows and attaches them to the
headbands. Of course, no outfit is complete
without a pair of sparkly silver shoes.
Beetlejuice, Zackali and Cotton Resources
make quality dresses that have a lot of sass
to them, so those are her favorite brands.
Vivi doesn’t go through the school year
without a pair of black Mary Janes like the
ones she has by Halogen or a pair of fun
ankle boots by Umi.
Our son Frank has a classic look to him. He
wears glasses, so he can pull off that cute
intellectual look. He looks great in
collared shirts, jeans and leather lace-up
shoes. Frank’s favorite shoes are his
lace-up brown leather Eccos. They go with
everything and are made especially well. Our
favorite store overall is Nordstrom.” – Katie Melkonian, co-owner, Breadwinner

“John R. is 14 years old, Vasser is 12 and
Laura Elizabeth is 9 years old. For Vasser,
we shop at Limited Too, Abercrombie & Fitch
and Hollister. She also wears Linda
Loudermilk organic T-shirts. Laura Elizabeth
and I like to shop at The GAP, Limited Too
and the children’s department of Neiman
Marcus. John R. is a walking billboard for
The Thrashers year-round. He also wears
Levi’s organic jeans. It’s really important
to me that they have their own sense of
style, and they’re great about selecting
clothing, shoes and accessories that fit
their personality and lifestyle. I have special one-on-one shopping days with
all of the kids, which is so important. You
really get to see what they like and
dislike, and they can learn about
decision-making and limits.

“Gabriel is 5½, and we have a second one
on the way! We are always focused on trends
that work with and can withstand a very
active child. Clothes need to be capable of
serious play, while looking great. Denim
will always fall into both categories, and
we have a blast finding unique custom-made
shirts that are designed by artists who
detail them in their own unique way. More
vibrant colors have been a part of Gabe’s
wardrobe lately. We also gravitate toward
solid backgrounds with funky artwork on top.
Think indie-rock hipster for kids. Gabe
loves wearing his heelies any time he can,
and his retro Vans are a favorite.
We love discovering little boutiques that
have the local or underground designers with
limited releases. We are very fortunate to
know a number of talented artists who custom
make apparel just for Gabriel.”

For Boys:

Target
GAP Kids
Colorful rugby styles in navy
blue, gray heather, dark red and brown.
Denim has a clean, authentic feel with work
wear-inspired details. The classic
five-pocket jean in vintage washes is a
must-have for fall, and five-pocket cords
are great in fall colors like campus blue,
ivy green and charcoal heather. ;
–GAP Kids
Classic favorites back this
year are tracksuits and
athletic-inspired fashions that
provide both fashion and function.
Layering is a key trend and a
styling technique that can transform
a look with one simple change. The
Young World department also boasts
the hottest looks from Ralph Lauren
and Lacoste. –Bloomingdale’s

Bloomingdale's
Mossimo’s collection of cargo
shorts, polos, tees, button-down
shirts and denim will make layering
an easy feat. Earth tones like moss
green and slate blue are very
popular for guys this back-to-school
season.
–Target
T-shirts with button-down
shirts are huge for back to school.
There are some new washes in denim
that boys should look out for – gray
is big. The distressed look is
definitely in this year, especially
in denim and other pants.
–The
Children’s Place
The vintage grunge look.
Vintage tees with car graphics,
retro pictures on shirts with
sports, animals and other screened
prints are the biggest things. Camo
pants and shirts are also popular
for back to school.

Plaid cropped pants, chunky knit sweater
coats and faux-fur trimmed vests are staples
for back to school. Full skirts worn over
leggings are fashionable and functional, and
wide-leg pants look smart paired with pretty
woven tops. Colors that will be big this
season are raspberry, burnt orange and
cobalt blue.
–GAP Kids
Belted baby-doll tees and dresses to
pair with leggings are going to be big
through the fall. Another trend we’re seeing
are the wide-legged jeans, as well as the
jeans with embellishment on the legs. For
dresses, prints and patterns are the way to
look stylish for back to school.
–Limited
Too!

Girls Must-Have Items: leggings; tunic
tops; dresses in printed, baby-doll or
jumper styles; colored trench; trend denim
by True Religion, Seven for All Mankind or
Diesel. From shine to animal print, this

attitude to every outfit.
–Bloomingdale’s
Layering is key for back-to-school
fashion. Blazers in bold colors like red,
chocolate brown and turquoise paired with
jeans or a dress will really pop. Ballet
flats are a comfy and stylish choice for
back to school.
–Target
Back to the cowboy look
– there’s a big
accent on boots and Western-style skirts.
Leggings have carried over from last year,
but with embellishments like buttons and
ruffles at the bottom to add a bit more
flare.
–The Children’s Place
Look for a lot of vibrant colors:
orange, hot pink and red. Florals are also
big for back to school. There’s a mixture of
textures available – velvets and corduroys.
Bubble skirts, which are really fun and have
been a staple for women the past few
seasons, are coming out for girls in a lot
of back-to-school collections.
