Cunard Memorial Playground at John Howell Park

Features: This three-acre park in Virginia-Highland is full of meaning and adventure. The park includes unusual equipment sure to appeal to older children. Kids can spin, surf on a doughnut-shaped sphere, and experiment with equipment designed to test their strength. Pieces for young children, including a fire truck and a new mainstream playground system, also can be found here. A rubberized surface makes this park top notch. The community raised funds to build the playground in memory of a mother and her two children who died in 2003.

Amenities: Parking is located on surface streets in the area. Benches and drinking fountains are available. Sculptures, green spaces, sidewalks for skating and biking, and a sand volleyball court also are available. The grounds are popular with Frisbee fanatics.

Directions: John Howell Park is located at the corner of Virginia Avenue and Barnett Street in Atlanta, across the street from Inman Middle School. From the I-75/I-85 Connector, take the 10th Street exit east to Monroe Drive. Turn right on Monroe Drive and then left at the next light on Virginia Avenue. Drive east until you see the park on the right.
