Paris in Our Own Backyard
High Museum of Art, Atlanta
Visiting the world’s most romantic city is an
experience of a lifetime. Paris is full of history
and, of course, some of the most famous art in the
world.
So to have some of that art leave Paris for
Atlanta is no small deal. This major undertaking
between the Musee du Louvre and the High Museum of
Art is a gift to the place we call home and one your
family should take advantage of.
Just seeing the reaction kids have to the artwork
makes you realize the trip is worth it. One
3-year-old girl was so captivated by an outside
advertisement of a painting by Diego Velazquez, The
Infanta Margarita, she would not rest until she
found it. When she finally was able to see the
painting, she listened intently to the narration
about the piece – finding out the subject was a
3-year-old Spanish princess when the artist painted
her. The girl shouted out, “She was like me and she
was a princess!”
The museum staff has worked to make the exhibit
accessible and appealing to kids of nearly every
age. Aspiring artists and aficionados will have fun
recognizing colors and shapes, as well as finding
special works of art.
Every member of the family gets a headset for an
audio tour of the exhibit, with both adult and
family narrations available. The funny,
French-accented narration catches children’s
attention and makes the artwork come to life.
Older children and teens will enjoy the insights
into each piece as narrated on the audio tour, which
asks listeners questions about the artwork. There
also are educational programs tied into the Louvre
exhibit, including art classes (visit www.high.org
for schedule and pricing).
Don’t forget to see the rest of the museum and
make sure not to miss the Greene Family Education
Center on the ground floor. Activities are tied into
the Louvre exhibit, completing your Paris-in-Atlanta
experience.
Mark your calendar for the High’s Family Day on
March 4, “I Love Paris in the Springtime.”
Activities include classic French mimes, hands-on
art making and French folk songs.
