A
Capital Museum
by Kristina Whitehurst
This month, the halls of the state capitol will
be filled with a political energy no textbook or
video could ever pass on. And with the capitol so
close, it’s a good time to bring your school-aged
children downtown.
Beginning the second Monday in January, something
new is constantly happening within this
architectural masterpiece. Whether there is a
performance in the rotunda, a press conference, a
rally outside, or maybe even a heated debate to
watch from the gallery.
Although younger children aren’t permitted in the
gallery, they can still get in on the action –
whether they’re hearing their own voice echo in the
rotunda or viewing some of the exhibits upstairs,
like the “Mountains and Seas” exhibit, in the
Georgia Capitol Museum.
To avoid the busiest parts of the day at the
capitol, try going in the afternoon.
Getting there: The Capitol is located in downtown
Atlanta at the intersection of I-20 and I-75/85,
near Underground Atlanta, The World of Coca-Cola,
and the Five Points and Georgia State MARTA
stations.
