Fernbank Museum of Natural History: Explore the “Giants of the Mesozoic,” this local museum’s permanent dinosaur exhibit. 404-929-6300, www.fernbank.edu/museum.

Creative Discovery Museum: Located in Chattanooga, this hands-on children’s museum has great interactive exhibits for kids, including an “excavation site” to dig for fossils. 723-756-2738, www.cdmfun.org.

McWane Science Center: You won’t want to miss the fossil exhibit at this Birmingham, Ala., museum which houses a variety of things to explore. 205-714-8300, www.mcwane.org.

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences: Located in Raleigh, this museum includes a large dinosaur exhibit featuring the world’s only dinosaur with a fossilized heart. Free except for special exhibits. 919-733-7450, visit www.naturalsciences.org.

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History: Located in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian includes the most extensive dinosaur exhibits in the country. 202-357-2700, www.nmnh.si.edu.

Children’s Museum of Indianapolis: The world’s largest children’s museum is also home to the nation’s largest display of juvenile dinosaurs.
