The Rome Braves

"TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME..." shouts, I mean, sings my son, Carson, 5, on our way to see the Rome Braves, a class "A" South Atlantic League affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. Somewhere between his 15th and 20th rendition, the Rome Braves State Mutual Stadium loomed into view.

There’s nothing minor about this impressive brick facade stadium, which can accommodate over 5,000 fans with 14 luxury boxes, state-of-the-art audio-visual technology, including a giant screen to entertain fans, six concession areas, a full-service restaurant and a group pavilion. As we waited in line for our tickets, two foul balls flew overhead into the parking lot behind us, reminding us that we had forgotten our gloves.

We sat club level behind the backstop above the Three River’s Club restaurant. While there is truly not a bad seat in the house, the protective mom in me liked our location because of the netting, preventing most foul balls from our area. For my children, however, the foul balls just added to the excitement of the game.

Parents with active younger kids should consider Home Run Hill, a grassy area near right field full of activity. In left field, non-designated drivers will find the Budweiser Beach Party lawn with Thursday night specials.

My daughter, Ansley, 8, enjoyed watching the fast-paced game, which is played with wooden bats, while my son looked forward to the entertainment and giveaways between innings, including pizzas, ice cream, hats and T-shirts for the loudest fans. Romey, the mascot, delighted the children, as did the wacky race between the giant hot dog, ketchup and shark.

At the concession stand, you’ll find lots of kid-pleasers such as enormous pretzels, a heaping pile of nachos and triple-scoop ice cream sundaes, both served in helmet bowls, which make great souvenirs.

My son proudly sang "Take me out to the ball game" during the seventh inning stretch and most of the way home, making this minor league game major fun. Oh, by the way, the Braves won!
