Kids

by Sarah Bluvas

The last day of school typically signals the shutdown of most kids’ brains, with sleeping, video games and playing outside taking precedence over math, science, social studies and reading. But the end of classes doesn’t have to mean your kids should stop trying to make the grade. Countless numbers of learning toys and games are available to keep young brains fired up during summer vacation.

Brain Quest is a trivia game for all ages. Two decks of cards with questions on one side and answers on the other come in every box and are easy to carry whether going to the pool or on a road trip. Different sets range from preschool to seventh grade, but these learning tools are a great way to get students of all ages to challenge themselves in math, reading and random facts. Questions with themes like "Brain Quest Black History" and "Brain Quest Presidents" provide after-dinner fun for the entire family. www.brainquest.com

Apples to Apples Junior is a fun way to help your child expand vocabulary and thinking skills. Your family will have a blast making clever comparisons out of words on your “red apple” cards; the person with the best comparison each round collects a “green apple” card, and the first player to win four green apple cards wins! The wide range of words will not only create hilarious comparisons but will also teach your children synonyms and antonyms to add to their vocabulary and reinforce general knowledge about people, places and things. www.otb-games.com

Borderline Geography Games let your children get to know the world without having to step outside your house. The educational card game has four different versions and is as easy as Crazy Eights. Each card has different sections of a map on it, and kids try to call their friends’ bluffs while learning geography at the same time. Before you know it, your children will know the location of every state in the U.S. and every country in the world!

Borderline also has a new product called "Reach and Teach: MAPTANGLE," a 33-square-foot World Map that will provide hours of fun as your kids learn about the world’s natural and man-made wonders and geographical features! www.borderlinegames.com

Kids can also brush up on their state capitals or learn a new language. Magnetic Poetry products, which also include word stickers, creativity journals and poetry stones, aren’t just for kids; parents can have a ball mixing up favorite movie lines or expressing their inner Shakespeare. www.magneticpoetry.co

SMATH is a Scrabble-like board game that uses math equations instead of words, adding up to a ton of educational fun for you and your kids. Each player uses tiles with numbers and signs to create equations on the board. Kids can learn how to expand simple equations by building on ones already on the board. Calculator skills will also improve as your child uses them to challenge equations. The difficulty level can be increased as children master math principles. www.pressmantoy.com
